Biography
Dr. Sue Mitchell is a former evolutionary ecologist and expedition leader who speaks on inner sustainability and adaptable leadership for you to thrive, work effectively and navigate challenges, change and uncertainty without stress. She is an executive coach and author of “The Authority Guide to Engaging your People”.
Sue brings a unique blend of science, leadership and coaching to her virtual and in-the-room engagements with a focus on insightful keynotes and interactive masterclasses. Her mindset approach combined with systemic perspectives gives you practical tools and strategies for finding focus, clarity and confidence to adapt to complex challenges while remaining true to your core purpose, and to raise resilience, engagement and collaboration.
“As a scientist, I was trained to take the person out of everything, to focus on the science and the task to get properly objective results. However, over the years, I’ve come to realise that no matter what discipline or sector you work in, you can only be your best and inspire high performance (for yourself and others) when you put the person into everything. I help you do this through a mindset approach to self-leadership and leading others that gives you tools to raise wellbeing, engagement AND performance.”
Diverse audiences engage with her story-based keynote message: Recognising your human reactions to change and uncertainty gives you the power to take control of your mindset, make wiser choices and set yourself up for success in achieving your purpose no matter what curve-balls life throws your way.
Sue combines the spirit of adventure with the rigour of science in her events. She draws on her unique experience from leading expeditions to remote parts of the world, sailing across the South Pacific Ocean, scuba diving and training scuba instructors, growing up in Africa, a multi-cultural working experience including her scientific research career that included a post-doc at Edinburgh University and a fellowship at a Max Planck Institute in Germany, as well as running a self-catering business and her leadership consultancy.
Sue has contributed in a range of voluntary roles over the years including Chair and treasurer of her local Community Council, numerous committee positions in sports clubs, National Instructor for the British Sub Aqua Club, mentoring for the Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Sport Scotland Leadership Programme, board member of Edinburgh Women in Banking and Finance, and Regional President Scotland for PSAUK&I Professional Speaking Association UK & Ireland.
Sue is a Fellow of the Professional Speaking Association and was a Professional Member of the Association for Coaching for over 15 years. She is qualified in Executive Coaching and several psychometric assessments including Emotional Intelligence EQ-i2, Mental Strength MTQ Plus, Leadership Styles ILM72 and others. (And in case you were wondering about the science, Sue has a masters in Marine Environmental Protection and her PhD is in Evolutionary Ecology. Sue’s research was on evolutionary strategies for success and non-linear genetic-by-environment interactions impacting quantitative traits and population diversity.)
Dr Sue Mitchell’s talks are eligible for delegates to receive CPD certificates, accredited with the CPDSO (The CPD Standards Office, CPD Provider PSA90025).

Solutions Focus facilitation for overcoming issues hampering implementation of our objectives
Where are we now?
Identify ‘AS IS’ – mid-term in the implementation of the strategy 2018-2021
- Identify objectives that are not yet achieved. Brief analysis to understand the barriers and issues and find instances when they were less of an issue.
- Recognise and celebrate achievements so far and analyse what made them work well.
Define the future and plan to achieve it
- Living the Strategic Vision – what does the endpoint in 2021 look like?
- Re-commit to our purpose and strategic vision
Create the bridge from ‘as is’ to reach the vision, taking into account what is at stake and external forces that both drive and restrain the management team.
Clearly understand what is at stake if there is no change and what happens when we succeed.
- Identify indicators and evidence of success, how we will recognise them, and who else needs to recognise them.
- What can we do more of that has worked well already?
- How can we make use of what we already have?
- What are the possibilities – past, present and future?
- What leadership activities are needed to inspire, motivate and engage our people and external stakeholders to make this happen?
The Power of Positive
This fun, highly interactive masterclass gives your managers the essential ingredients to create the positive environment and ‘can-do’ culture for working successfully together and to create high performing teams themselves. It is ideal when your people could do with a burst of positive energy to revitalise a project or manage changes.
Working in pairs, small groups and as a whole team, we look at ways to build positive thinking and emotions into everyday life at work, making it easier to work more effectively together and raising wellbeing and engagement.
Evidence from neuroscience shows that feeling positive, and especially safe, unstressed and unthreatened, opens up access to the higher reasoning cognitive part of brain which leads to more creative thinking, inspiration, new ideas, solution finding, problem solving, focus and improved social interaction, all of which support higher performance at work. When you feel negative or stressed, your brain literally shuts down access to the cognitive areas of the brain, resulting in poor focus, feelings of overwhelm, interpersonal conflicts, inability to listen to different perspectives and poor decision making, all of which have a negative impact on performance and productivity.
