Biography

Misha Glenny’s background

Misha Glenny is an expert on global organised crime and cybersecurity. His book, “McMafia: A Journey through the Global Criminal Underworld” has been the influence of the popular TV series “McMafia”, which is set to become one of the biggest crime fiction series of 2018.

As a speaker, his knowledge of the criminal underworld lends him a fascinating edge that is both interesting for an after-dinner speech, and informative for a security-focused conference.

Misha exposes threats to businesses in light of ever-changing technology. His enthralling keynote speeches are delivered with passion, humour, and an expert understanding of the minds of hackers and criminals.

Along with the Sony Gold Award for outstanding contribution to broadcasting, he was named UK Cyber Security Journalist of the Year in 2013 and won the Cyber Security feature of the year in 2014. His work focuses on the motivation of criminal hackers, the migration of traditional organised crime groups into cyber and the key issue of Communication in Cyber Security.

His personal encounters with hackers provide him with gravitas and exceptional insight into the minds of hackers and cyber-criminals. He has interviewed dozens of mafia bosses and members of organised crime groups. More recently, a new and separate network of criminal activity has emerged – cybercrime. He presents the issues surrounding cybersecurity in a relevant and fascinating socio-political context.

Misha studied Drama and German at the University of Bristol after which he attended the Charles University in Prague. He is a talented linguist and is fluent in German, Serbo-Croat, Czech and Portuguese.

He recently served as a visiting professor at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute where he ran a course entitled Crime, Corruption and Economic Transition. He was voted the best lecturer at SIPA for his work there.

Misha is on the international advisory boards of several major NGOs. He is regularly consulted by governments in Europe and the Americas on the Balkans and Eastern Europe, on transnational organized crime and on cybersecurity.

Misha has spoken at TED Global and is requested internationally to speak at corporate functions and events. He is also Founder and Director of SEE Change, a project which assisted cooperation within multi-ethnic communities in Serbia, Kosovo and Macedonia.

McMafia - A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld

McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the deregulation of international financial markets in 1989, governments and entrepreneurs alike became intoxicated by dreams of newly opened markets. But no one could have foreseen that the greatest success story to arise from these events would be the worldwide rise of organized crime. Today, it is estimated that illegal trade accounts for one-fifth of the global GDP.

The Balkans, 1804-2012 - Nationalism, War and the Great Powers

The Balkans, 1804-2012: Nationalism, War and the Great Powers

In this celebrated, landmark history of the Balkans, Misha Glenny investigates the roots of the bloodshed, invasions and nationalist fervour that have come to define our understanding of the south-eastern edge of Europe. In doing so, he reveals that groups we think of as implacable enemies have, over the centuries, formed unlikely alliances, thereby disputing the idea that conflict in the Balkans is the ineluctable product of ancient grudges. And he exposes the often-catastrophic relationship between the Balkans and the rest of Europe, raising profound questions about recent Western intervention.

DarkMarket: How Hackers Became the New Mafia

The benefits of living in a digital, globalized society are enormous; so too are the dangers. The world has become a law enforcer’s nightmare and every criminal’s dream. We bank online; shop online; date, learn, work and live online. But have the institutions that keep us safe on the streets learned to protect us in the burgeoning digital world? Have we become complacent about our personal security—sharing our thoughts, beliefs and the details of our daily lives with anyone who might care to relieve us of them?
