Biography

Tyler Brûlé: Pioneering Voice in Media, Design, and Global Affairs

Tyler Brûlé is a prominent figure in international media, design, and publishing, widely recognized for his entrepreneurial vision and editorial innovation. Born in Canada, Brûlé moved to the UK to pursue a career in journalism, training with the BBC and contributing to notable publications including The Sunday Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair.

A pivotal moment in his career occurred in 1994, when he was injured by sniper fire while reporting in Afghanistan. During his recovery, he conceived Wallpaper magazine, which he launched in 1996. The publication became a trendsetter in style, design, and lifestyle journalism, earning global acclaim and numerous awards.

Building on the success of Wallpaper, Brûlé founded Winkreative in 1998, a branding and design agency renowned for crafting bespoke solutions for a global clientele. Winkreative has worked with high-profile brands such as American Express, Prada Sport, Swiss International Air Lines, and Time magazine.

In 2007, Brûlé launched Monocle, a magazine that has since evolved into a global media brand spanning business, culture, design, and international affairs. With a readership across more than 65 countries, Monocle now includes a 24-hour digital radio station (Monocle 24), robust online content, and a network of retail shops in major cities around the world.

Brûlé is also a sought-after speaker and columnist, currently writing the “Fast Lane” column for the Financial Times Weekend. Known for his engaging and charismatic presentation style, he captivates audiences with insights drawn from his extensive global travels and multidisciplinary expertise.

As host and editorial voice behind Monocle’s flagship radio programmes—such as Monocle on Sunday and The Chiefs—Brûlé sets the tone for the brand’s international perspective, often broadcasting from Monocle’s bureaux in Zürich, Tokyo, and Hong Kong.

His achievements have been recognized with several honors, including being named Editor of the Year by Ad Age. He also received the British Society of Magazine Editors’ Lifetime Achievement Award—notably, as its youngest-ever recipient.

Brûlé continues to shape global conversations at the intersection of media, design and international affairs, embodying the very trends he helps to define.
