Backshall’s ability to present complex scientific content in an accessible and engaging manner has succeeded in elevating public awareness towards conservation issues and established him as a leading figure in environmental documentary filmmaking. His unsurpassed wildlife knowledge and dynamic presence makes him a compelling and inspiring speaker with an ability to captivate audiences of all ages.

Backshall is best known for his daring expeditions and captivating television career. He has filmed over 100 hours of children’s wildlife programming (namely his phenomenally successful BBC series Deadly 60) and continues to present cutting-edge mainstream television, pushing the boundaries of exploration and storytelling for international broadcasters, including the BBC, Channel 5, ABC, PBS and SKY TV. Last year, Backshall travelled across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans for Sky TV’s groundbreaking series Whale, which highlights the plight of endangered marine species. He also returned to BBC One with the second instalment of Our Changing Planet, an ambitious 7-year documentary project tracking the impact of environmental change on critical ecosystems.

He is currently the host of Expedition with Steve Backshall, a new BBC Two series showcasing extraordinary adventures into some of the planet’s most remote and challenging environments. Backshall’s passion for the natural world extends beyond the screen. Complimenting his exceptional television career, Backshall is also a best-selling author, with a range of books extending from children’s fiction to adult non-fiction. Additionally, his sell-out theatre show Ocean received high acclaim during tours of both UK and Australia. Having already inspired 100,000 people across the UK, the show continues this autumn.

Backshall’s adventurous exploits extend even beyond these varied creative outlets. Deep Blue: My Ocean Journeys

Take a deep breath Steve Backshall was nine years old the first time he saw a shark, while on holiday with his family in Malaysia. It was the beginning of a life-long fascination with these ‘lords of the sea’, and the oceanic life around them. His career as one of the world’s most popular naturalists and explorers has taken him to countless underwater places, many never before seen by others. And he’s also been witness to the startling decline in fortune of our oceans’ wild inhabitants over the past fifty years. Deep Blue is a book a lifetime in the making: a remarkable blend of memoir, travel, and marine and environmental science that takes us on an unforgettable tour of the many worlds of aquatic life: from underwater deserts and rainforests to the evolution of ocean heroes like the sea turtle and the Great White, from the genesis of ocean life to the rapidly declining state of white polar seas and coral reefs. It’s both a love letter to our precious oceans and rallying cry for what we must do to save them.

Mountain: A Life on the Rocks

Steve Backshall’s love affair with the mountains has taken him to some of the world’s wildest places, environments that have the power to make a human being feel very small, very vulnerable and very alive. MOUNTAIN: A LIFE OF THE ROCKS is an account of his most breathtaking expeditions: heading into the ‘Death Zone’ on the roof of the world in the Himalayas, and picking a precarious route up hundreds of metres of rock in the Arctic and Alps. There are expeditions of exploration, as Steve makes the first ascent of jungle peaks and scales the tabletop mountains of the ‘Lost World’, Venezuela’s Gran Sabana, in search of undiscovered animal species on their summits. Steve recalls his apprenticeship in the art of mountaineering with the Indian army, and the terror and near-disaster of some of his more ill-fated adventures, including the aftermath of the fall that should have ended his life. This is a tale of terror and ecstasy, a book that tries to get to the heart of why we risk our lives to climb and conquer. But most of all, MOUNTAIN is a love letter to the wilderness, from one of the world’s most adventurous spirits.
