Biography
Dr Onyeka Nubia: Historian, Author and Presenter
Dr Onyeka Nubia is a pioneering and internationally recognised historian, writer and presenter who is reinventing our perceptions of British history, British mythology, Black (African) British history, intersectionality, and the Renaissance.
He has helped to shape entirely new strands of history including diversity in Ancient, Medieval, Tudor, and Georgian societies, as well as Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Onyeka is one of a small group of dynamic scholars who are examining the methodologies and critical framework of colonialism, imperialism, otherness, and national identity. Onyeka is also interested in re-historicising our understanding of World Wars I and II.
Film work
Onyeka has been a consultant and presenter for several television programmes including the Walking Victorian Britain series (Channel 5), Digging for Britain (BBC), History Cold Case: The Ipswich Man (BBC) and Skeletons of the Mary Rose and Crossrail Discovery: London’s Lost Graveyard (Channel 4).
Speaker
An internationally renowned speaker, Onyeka has been the keynote presenter at prestigious venues including the Houses of Parliament, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland. He has also spoken at universities throughout the UK and the USA, including SOAS University London, Vanderbilt University (USA), Georgia State and Clarke Atlanta Universities (USA).
Awards
A Visiting Research Fellow at Edgehill and Huddersfield Universities and Director of Studies at Narrative Eye, Onyeka is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards.
Books
Recent books include What is History Now (London: 2021), England’s Other Countrymen: Black Tudor Society (London: 2019) and Blackamoores: Africans in Tudor England: Their Presence Status and Origins (London: 2013, 2014).
Writing
Onyeka has written over forty articles on Englishness, Britishness and historical method, which have appeared popular UK historical magazines and periodicals including History Today and the BBC History Magazine.
