Biography

Regarded as one of the world’s most respected and significant leaders in central banking, Mervyn King (Lord King of Lothbury, KG, GBE, FBA) recently served for ten years as the Governor of the Bank of England, chairman of its Monetary Policy Committee and as the Chairman of the group of major central banks at the BIS (formerly the G-10 Governors). This capped a long and productive 22-year tenure at the Bank where he also served as deputy governor, chief economist and executive and non-executive director. Lord King was front and center as the Bank dealt with the 2008 financial crisis, leading Britain through an extraordinary period of its economic history that began with inflation targeting and seeking monetary independence to enacting far-reaching reform, prudent regulation and more active financial oversight.

In July of 2013, he was appointed a life peer in the British House of Lords by Queen Elizabeth II for contributions of significant public service and was also appointed a Knight of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014. Lord King is Alan Greenspan Professor of Economics and Professor of Law at New York University and Emeritus Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics. Lord King has also written and speaks about financial crises of the past, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and especially the rather unfamiliar financial crisis of 1914. As a distinguished figure who has shaped public discourse over the last 30 years, Lord King offers a unique depth to the economic challenges that face the new world economy. Tackling fundamental economic questions, he provides an unprecedented vision for modern capitalism in his book The End of Alchemy: Money, Banking and the Future of the Global Economy (March, 2016). He is also the co-author (with John Kay) of the best-seller Radical Uncertainty: Decision-making Beyond the Numbers, published in 2020. In 2022, Lord King was awarded the inaugural Guido Carli Bancor Prize which celebrates the personalities of the economic-financial world who have distinguished themselves for their competence, integrity, and transparency.

Radical Uncertainty: Decision-making for an unknowable future

When uncertainty is all around us, and the facts are not clear, how can we make good decisions? We do not know what the future will hold, particularly in the midst of a crisis, but we must make decisions anyway. We regularly crave certainties which cannot exist and invent knowledge we cannot have, forgetting that humans are successful because we have adapted to an environment that we understand only imperfectly. Throughout history we have developed a variety of ways of coping with the radical uncertainty that defines our lives. This incisive and eye-opening book draws on biography, history, mathematics, economics and philosophy to highlight the most successful – and most short-sighted – methods of dealing with an unknowable future. Ultimately, the authors argue, the prevalent method of our age falls short, giving us a false understanding of our power to make predictions, leading to many of the problems we experience today. Tightly argued, provocative and written with wit and flair, Radical Uncertainty is at once an exploration of the limits of numbers and a celebration of human instinct and wisdom.

The End of Alchemy: Money, Banking and the Future of the Global Economy

The past twenty years saw unprecedented growth and stability followed by the worst financial crisis the industrialised world has ever witnessed. In the space of little more than a year what had been seen as the age of wisdom was viewed as the age of foolishness. Almost overnight, belief turned into incredulity. Most accounts of the recent crisis focus on the symptoms and not the underlying causes of what went wrong. But those events, vivid though they remain in our memories, comprised only the latest in a long series of financial crises since our present system of commerce became the cornerstone of modern capitalism. Alchemy explains why, ultimately, this was and remains a crisis not of banking – even if we need to reform the banking system – nor of policy-making – even if mistakes were made – but of ideas. In this refreshing and vitally important book, former governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King – an actor in this drama – proposes revolutionary new concepts to answer the central question: are money and banking a form of Alchemy or are they the Achilles heel of a modern capitalist economy?
