Marc Koska’s background
Helping to reduce the spread of HIV and other blood-borne infectious diseases, Koska achieved his original ambition and continues to crusade to reduce the occurrence of such infections through the work of his company, Star Syringe Ltd and through his charity, SafePoint.
It was in 1984 that Marc Koska stumbled upon the newspaper article that would be the catalyst for a 30 year journey to turn a great idea into a globally adopted reality. The article predicted the spread of the HIV virus through the sharing and re-use of medical syringes and, for Marc, it was a game-changer.
It ignited his interest in global public health and led to his invention: the K1 Auto Disable syringe that breaks following just one use.
Thirty years on and Marc’s invention has been credited with saving more than nine million lives and licensed by 14 global manufacturers.
Marc’s energy and focus is now in implementing safe injection practices into every corner of the globe through SafePoint Trust, the non-profit organisation he founded.
For his work and the struggles, setbacks and breakthroughs he endured to bring his life-saving idea to fruition, Marc was awarded the OBE.
A true example of a person who followed his calling, Koska went from a young man uncertain about his future to someone who changed the world. His dedication, knowledge and desire to help others is truly inspirational – he is a modern hero and an exceptional motivational and educational speaker.
