Biography

Meet Louis Gudema

Louis Gudema is a successful startup founder, award-winning marketer, mentor to MIT startups, and author who has helped close to 200 companies from IBM to non-profits improve their business results. His Bullseye Marketing book has won multiple awards and been called “brilliant and authoritative” by a leading nationally-renowned authority.

Louis founded Magic Hour Communications, pivoted it from a marketing communications agency serving Fortune 500 companies into a software firm, and grew it into one of the top three or four companies in its national market before a successful exit. He then closed dozens of new accounts as a vice president of business development for two marketing agencies, making him a rare marketer with serious sales experience. For the past ten years he’s worked as a fractional head of marketing for tech startups and SMBs, while also mentoring MIT startups.

For the past ten years, Louis has also led an annual half-day marketing boot camp for the MIT startup community. It is so well-received that last year he was asked to lead it twice. A typical comment was, “I enjoyed your presentation. It is easy to enjoy presentations that are delivered with your level of enthusiasm.”

Small- and mid-sized businesses with robust marketing programs typically grow 2-5 times faster than those without them — if they do it right. In this talk, award-winning author Louis Gudema will walk you through the fundamentals of his Bullseye Marketing approach, a three-step process that starts with the least expensive programs with the most immediate impact, and moves on to those that will build your company’s brand — its awareness, trust, and preference — that drives your greatest long-term growth.

You will get dozens of tips on how to execute marketing tactics more successfully, and see many examples of outstanding, creative marketing that drive sales.

Startups have a special business challenge since they are starting from zero: no customers, no brand, and often little money. Understandably, many make the mistake of only focusing on short-term sales and marketing programs — ones that they can see the results from in a few weeks. But the most successful startups combine a short-term and long-term strategy.

In this session, which is a variation of a boot camp that Louis Gudema has led for the MIT startup community annually for the past 10 years, you’ll learn the fundamentals of his three-step Bullseye Marketing framework and how to apply it successfully to a startup. This strategy starts with the least expensive programs with the most immediate impact, and moves on to those that will build your startup’s brand — its awareness, trust, and preference — that drives your greatest long-term growth.

You will get dozens of tips on how to execute marketing tactics more successfully, and see many examples of outstanding, creative startup marketing that drives sales.

Whether you’re selling to consumers or B2B companies, your customers are people. And people use heuristics — mental shortcuts — to make many of their buying decisions. In this session, you’ll be introduced to seven heuristics that are especially useful in sales and marketing, and see examples and learn tactics that you can use to take advantage of them to generate leads and close sales.

The heuristics that will be discussed are:
Anchoring
Authority
Availability
Liking
Loss Aversion
Reciprocity
Scarcity

It’s estimated that over two million self-published books are put out annually, but most sink with little notice. In this session, Louis Gudema, author and publisher of Bullseye Marketing, will talk about what he learned between creating the first and second editions of his book that made the second edition more successful. The second edition has been named:

  • The 2023 Best Marketing/Branding Book, by Goody Business Book Awards
  • One of the Best Marketing Plan Books of All Time, by Book Authority
  • Finalist for Best Marketing Book, from Book Excellence Awards

You’ll learn about such important matters as writing, editing, design, publishing, promotion, and award opportunities.
