Biography
Meet Dr Julia Jones
Dr Julia Jones has been studying and applying the science of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour for over thirty years. She considers the nature of habits, why they’re hard to change, and their effect on our mental and physical health and wellbeing. By applying this research practically, Julia has developed strategies (and started businesses) to help people make simple changes that have a big impact on their lives.
Julia first discovered ‘biohacking’ techniques during a visit to a US Navy SEALs base in California in the 1990s, where she was shown how music affects anxiety, endurance and sleep. As both a sport and exercise scientist, and a musician and DJ, she was fascinated by this scientific exploration of the power of music and sound, and undertook a life of research and study into the innate science underpinning our behaviours. Her work expanded into other biohacks, exploring the effects of daylight exposure, timed eating and fasting, cold showers, and breathwork on health, wellness and performance. She worked with the GB Olympic team as a psychologist, and with clients from NHS dementia projects
to business leaders to award-winning actors and musicians.
Applying her understanding of how habits become embedded, Julia has spent years researching why, despite 50 years where the diet and fitness industry’s profits have consistently increased, so have waistlines, and the scale of the associated health problems. She has distilled this work into three habit-hacks that have a profound effect on the three core, evolutionary, inter-related physical systems – the circadian/sleep cycle, the gut-brain axis, and stress response.
In her Health Trilogy books, Julia has worked to spread awareness of the new scientific research and the effectiveness of simple, science-based habits. The series began with The Music Diet book, showcasing the versatile power of music and sound as a biohack. The follow up, Neuron, became the foundation of her wellness startup (Holidity) as well as her flagship habit-hacking programme (The 90-Day Reset). Whilst F-Bomb completed the Trilogy with an exploration of the science of longevity, gaining a front-page mention in The Times as well as numerous TV appearances. There followed the launch to two innovate new habit-hacking products – Hack, a prebiotic, gut health supporting coffee; and Music Hacks, a collaboration with Universal Music to improve stress resilience and sleep.
Julia’s Dr Julia Jones Live show, and her Biohacking Bootcamps, have built on her work combining science, entertainment (in particular music) and interactivity to explain complex ideas. With many chronic illnesses beginning silently at a cellular level during working life, Julia is engaging with organisations to ensure their employee wellness programmes include this cutting-edge epigenetic science at their core.
