Biography Highlights

  • One of the most recognizable figures in politics, James Carville is an insider who analyzes the Obama Administration, Congress, the 2016 Presidential election and the global political landscape with his signature energy and humor.

Biography

There’s nobody in politics like James Carville. Offering bombastic, enthusiastic, shoot-from-the-hip, no-holds-barred political commentary combined with a quick wit and a Southern drawl, the “Ragin’ Cajun” is instantly recognizable from his frequent TV appearances. Carville has been at the center of some of the most dramatic political victories of our generation and his insights move and shape the political landscape. With the trends in the political arena towards polarity and partisanship, the highly partisan atmosphere in Washington and constant power shifts over the last few years have proven that the old rules of politics and power are gone—maybe forever. Carville now discusses with audiences what effects political division will have on both political parties, the race for the White House, and our country for decades to come. In addition to his expertise in domestic politics, Carville has also worked on international campaigns in more than 23 countries including those of 14 heads of state. He is also a columnist for The Hill newspaper which publishes daily when Congress is in session and the author of numerous books including It’s the Middle Class, Stupid! (2012) and All’s Fair: Love, War, and Running for President, written with his wife and favorite debate partner Mary Matalin. In their second joint memoir, Love and War: Twenty Years, Three Presidents, Two Daughters and One Louisiana Home (January 2014), Carville and Matalin take a look at how they—and America—have changed in the last two decades. In their two distinct voices, they pick up their story from the end of the 1992 Presidential campaign to their new life in New Orleans today where their efforts to rebuild and promote that city have become a central part of their lives—and a poignant metaphor for moving the nation forward. Carville’s latest book, We’re Still Right, They’re Still Wrong (2016) updates his 1996 New York Times best seller with a thoughtful, sharp analysis of Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party, Donald Trump, and the 2016 presidential race.

Popular Talks

The legendary, provocative, and always timely James Carville presents his captivating views on American and international politics, spiced with his own unique brand of optimism and humor. This political mastermind and a fixture in U.S. politics shares his thoughts on current events, the Trump Administration, the GOP-controlled Congress, and the challenges facing the major political parties and players. Carville discusses how, beginning in 2006, American political power started shifting between the two parties, with neither party holding onto the reins of leadership for long. The highly partisan atmosphere in Washington and constant power shifts over the last few years have proven that the old rules of politics and power are gone—maybe forever. Why is this happening? Are politicians intentionally dividing the electorate for political gain? Why have things become so partisan? He dissects the extreme political forces shaping the country and shows what trends from the last two decades mean for our political future. Using data derived from the intersection of policy, politics and public opinion, Carville believes the real strength in America is the power of youth and that those wishing to maintain political power ignore this bloc at their own peril.

We're Still Right, They're Still Wrong: The Democrats' Case for 2016

In We’re Still Right, They’re Still Wrong, Carville updates his #1 New York Times bestseller from 1996, the campaign tract that Bill Clinton once credited for his re-election. Carville skewers the GOP’s dumpster fire of a record over the past twenty years, and argues that Trump is the living manifestation of a failed party. From income inequality to race relations, Carville believes that Democratic Party is not only the dominant party of the past, but of America’s future, too – and he makes the case in his uncensored and earthy style. Among other things, We’re Still Right, They’re Still Wrong features a hot take on the Clinton e-mail “scandal,” a story about Carville’s momma’ schooling a pair of crawfish mongers, a lecture on political panics called “The Anatomy of Bullshit,” and a recipe for how to grill your (non-existent) Trump Steak. And wit and sharp tongue aside, Carville turns it all into the most cogent and thoughtful analysis of the 2016 and how the Democrats can—and must—be victorious.

Love & War: Twenty Years, Three Presidents, Two Daughters and One Louisiana Home

For twenty years, James Carville and Mary Matalin have held the mantle of the nation’s most politically opposed, ideologically mismatched, and intensely opinionated couple. In this follow-up to their groundbreaking All’s Fair: Love, War, and Running for President, Carville and Matalin take a look at how they—and America—have changed in the last two decades. If nothing else, this new collaboration proves that after twenty years of marriage they can still manage to agree on a few things. Love & War traces, in their two distinct voices, James and Mary’s story from the end of the 1992 presidential campaign—where he managed Bill Clinton’s electoral triumph while she suffered defeat as George H. W. Bush’s key strategist—till now. Mary focuses on issues of family, faith, and foreign enemies and offers insights from her kitchen table as well as the White House Cabinet Room, while James’s concentration is politics and love—the triumphant and troubled Clinton era, George W. Bush’s complicated presidency, the election of Barack Obama, the rise of the corrosive partisanship that dominates political life in Washington today, and the overriding abiding romance he holds for his native Louisiana and his wife and children. Together, the Carville-Matalins reflect on raising two daughters in the pressure cooker of the nation’s capital, and their momentous 2008 decision to leave D.C. and move their family to New Orleans. Post-Katrina, James and Mary’s efforts to rebuild and promote that city have become a central part of their lives—and a poignant metaphor for moving the nation forward. A fascinating look at the last two decades in American politics and an intimate, quick-witted primer on grown-up relationships and values, Love & War provides unprecedented insight into one of our nation’s most intriguing and powerful couples. With their natural charm and sharp intelligence, Carville and Matalin have written undoubtedly the most spirited memoir of the year.

It's the Middle Class, Stupid!

It’s the Middle Class, Stupid! confirms what we have all suspected: Washington and Wall Street have really screwed things up for the average American. Work has been devalued. Education costs are out of sight. Effort and ambition have never been so scantily rewarded. Political guru James Carville and pollster extraordinaire Stan Greenberg argue that our political parties must admit their failures and the electorate must reclaim its voice, because taking on the wealthy and the privileged is not class warfare—it is a matter of survival. Told in the alternating voices of these two top political strategists, It’s the Middle Class, Stupid! provides eye-opening and provocative arguments on where our government—including the White House—has gone wrong, and what voters can do about it. Controversial and outspoken, authoritative and shrewd, It’s the Middle Class, Stupid! is destined to make waves during the 2012 presidential campaign, and will set the agenda for legislative battles and political dust-ups during the next administration.
