Topics

George F. Will, Pulitzer Prize-winning commentator, political analyst, and New York Times best-selling author will share his insights on our tumultuous recent politics, and the prospects for 2024. Drawing on his more than 50 years at the center of national politics in Washington, Will, an independent unaffiliated with either party, can explain the complexities involved in winning 270 electoral votes. And the challenge of winning in a way that will enable the president inaugurated on January 20, 2025, to address pressing problems. A student of U.S. history, Will believes that our problems are not larger than those the nation has surmounted in the past, and that American democracy is more sturdy than current critics suggest.

American Happiness and Discontents: The Unruly Torrent, 2008-2020

George F. Will has been one of this country’s leading columnists since 1974. He won the Pulitzer Prize for it in 1977. The Wall Street Journal once called him “perhaps the most powerful journalist in America.” In this new collection, he examines a remarkably unsettling thirteen years in our nation’s experience, from 2008 to 2020. Included are a number of columns about court cases, mostly from the Supreme Court, that illuminate why the composition of the federal judiciary has become such a contentious subject. Other topics addressed include the American Revolutionary War, historical figures from Frederick Douglass to JFK, as well as a scathing assessment of how State of the Union Addresses are delivered in the modern day. Mr. Will also offers his perspective on American socialists, anti-capitalist conservatives, drug policy, the criminal justice system, climatology, the Coronavirus, the First Amendment, parenting, meritocracy and education, China, fascism, authoritarianism, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, and the morality of enjoying football. American Happiness and Discontents: The Unruly Torrent, 2008-2020 is a collection packed with wisdom and leavened by humor from one the preeminent columnists and intellectuals of our time.

Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball

In his classic tribute to America’s pastime, political commentator, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, and lifelong sports enthusiast George F. Will travels from the baseball field to the dugout to the locker room to get to the root of the game we all love. He breaks down the sport to its four basic components, managing, pitching, hitting, and fielding, and analyzes the way four of its notables, manager Tony La Russa, pitcher Orel Hershiser, outfielder Tony Gwynn, and shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., approach the game. One of the most acclaimed sports books ever written, Men at Work is a revelatory, and often surprising, study of professional baseball.

The Conservative Sensibility

For more than four decades, George F. Will has attempted to discern the principles of the Western political tradition and apply them to America’s civic life. Today, the stakes could hardly be higher. Vital questions about the nature of man, of rights, of equality, of majority rule are bubbling just beneath the surface of daily events in America.

With a Happy Eye But . . .: America and the World, 1997--2002

“It has taken me sixty years to identify the three keys to a happy life,” writes George Will. “A flourishing family, hearty friends, and a strong bullpen.” The title of this book — Will’s seventh collection of newspaper and magazine pieces, book reviews, speeches, and occasional writings — is taken from the W. H. Auden poem “The Horatians,” which dictates that we look at this world with a happy eye but from a sober perspective. And so it is with a happy eye indeed that Will shares his vision of America just before and after the birth of the twenty-first century. Featuring five years’ worth of observations on politics, current affairs, and international relations, With a Happy Eye But…is a brilliantly diverse collection from America’s most widely known commentator at his sober, happy, and controversial best.

A Nice Little Place on the North Side: Wrigley Field at One Hundred

In A Nice Little Place on the North Side, leading columnist George Will returns to baseball with a deeply personal look at his hapless Chicago Cubs and their often beatified home, Wrigley Field, as it enters its second century. Baseball, Will argues, is full of metaphors for life, religion, and happiness, and Wrigley is considered one of its sacred spaces. But what is its true, hyperbole-free history? Winding beautifully like Wrigley’s iconic ivy, Will’s meditation on “The Friendly Confines” examines both the unforgettable stories that forged the field’s legend and the larger-than-life characters—from Wrigley and Ruth to Veeck, Durocher, and Banks—who brought it glory, heartbreak, and scandal. Drawing upon his trademark knowledge and inimitable sense of humor, Will also explores his childhood connections to the team, the Cubs’ future, and what keeps long-suffering fans rooting for the home team after so many years of futility. In the end, A Nice Little Place on the North Side is more than just the history of a ballpark. It is the story of Chicago, of baseball, and of America itself.
