Biography

Doro Bush Koch is committed to a creating a life of mindfulness and personal well-being.

Staying present and grounded has made such an impact on her life that she has spent the last two decades focused on sharing this powerful message with the world.

Throughout her early life, Bush Koch felt that all politics was personal. As the only woman in history to have both a father and a brother as president of the United States of America, she worked to live a private life in a very public family – raising four children, working on campaigns, and volunteering for numerous philanthropies.

In 2001, on a walk in the woods with her sister-in-law Tricia Reilly Koch, who is a nutritionist and health counselor, she was introduced to the ancient science of mindfulness. It changed her whole perspective, and with it, she found a path toward calm. “I knew it was just the thing that I needed, being from a family that is in the public eye. It was an enormous help and a great tool to use,” says Bush Koch.

In her years of practice, Bush Koch has studied and mastered the technique of mindfulness and holistic thinking. She helps share and teach it to others through BB&R Wellness Consulting, a company she co-founded with her sister-in-law. As an extension of their business, the duo also produces a podcast called Health Gig that focuses on leaders and their personal journeys to health and wellness.

To help educate people on the benefits of this dynamic force, the BB&R partners are writing a book highlighting the transformative experiences of the thought leaders behind today’s mindfulness movement. The authors are also creating an app to help readers transition from theory to practice, with several different approaches to embracing mindfulness in their lives.

Bush Koch’s previous book, New York Times bestseller, “My Father, My President,” chronicles both the personal and public sides of her father, George H. W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States. Drawing on her own recollections, her father’s papers, and interviews with colleagues, family and friends, it offers an adoring account of the man the world knew has a successful businessman, seasoned diplomat, and artful politician, and the man she knew as a brave, loyal, generous, and fun-loving father.

Bush Koch was also an early supporter of her late mother’s clarion call to increase family literacy. Since 2012, she has served as the National Chair of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Adult Literacy, where she works tirelessly to reduce the number – now estimated at 36 million – of functionally illiterate people in our country.

Grounded, deeply faithful, and kind, Bush Koch connects with her audiences as she relates stories of her famous family or reveals mindfulness practices meant to ease harried minds. Listeners respond to Bush Koch’s palpable empathy and gracious spirit as she carries on, in her own inimitable way, her family’s tradition of serving others.

Leaders are first and foremost givers – sharing time, resources, and vision as they inspire others to action. And Doro Bush Koch should know. For her family, giving back is more than a moral obligation—it’s a part of their daily lives.

Her family’s tradition of volunteerism informed Bush Koch’s own philanthropic endeavors. She established the Maryland Family Literacy Initiative, as well as other national and local charities.

Long before her father became the 41st president, he instilled in Bush Koch the message that serving others is not limited to holding office or working with charitable causes. It is also about small, everyday gestures – the little things you do that make a difference to someone else.

Compassion and kindness have become hallmarks of her mindfulness practice and are keys, she believes, to leading a meaningful life. Through inspirational stories and moving anecdotes, Bush Koch illustrates how everyone has the ability to make an impact through kindness and compassion within their organization or community.

“My favorite definition of mindfulness is paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally with kindness,” explains Bush Koch.

“A daughter may not have either the expertise or objectivity of a historian … but a historian doesn’t know a father the way his daughter does,” writes Doro Bush Koch in her New York Times bestselling book “My Father, The President.”

In this highly singular, personal perspective of her presidential father, George H.W. Bush, Bush Koch speaks about the leadership qualities that contributed to his success in the political arena: his enduring ability to lead during times of strife, the humility and modesty that drew loyalty from people of all walks of life – including world leaders and former political foes – and the optimism that fueled his perspective on his country and the people in it.

With humorous and moving stories about life beyond the public glare, Bush Koch offers glimpses of her father’s richly layered life guided by family, faith, and friendship.

My Father, My President

When George H. W. Bush asked Doro to write this memoir, she contacted hundreds of his friends and associates; conducted scores of interviews with dignitaries including Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev, and General Colin Powell; tapped the memories of family members, including her mother, her four brothers, and of course, her father himself; and collected information from the former president’s never-before-released files. “Now for the first time, a complete portrait of George H. W. Bush emerges. Doro reveals her father as a young man courting his future wife, Barbara, and how the death of their first daughter brought them closer. Doro tells how they raised five children through much of her father’s long and storied career in public service, and offers details about this tenures as head of the Republication National Committee during Watergate, ambassador to the U.N., America’s liaison to China, and vice president for eight years under Ronald Reagan.” “Doro also provides an insider’s look at how the 41st president dealt with crises and challenges, all while keeping his humor and personality intact, and how he still does so while aiding victims of the 2004 tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. She shows how he felt when two of his sons entered politics – and when his eldest made it to the top – and sheds new light on his friendship with former rival Bill Clinton.”
