Biography
Ambassador Androulla Kaminara is the inaugural Distinguished-Diplomat-in-Residence at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Qatar).
Amb. Kaminara has over 40 years of exceptional record of leadership in public service, management and in diplomacy. She has served as the first female European Union (EU) Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Breaking the glass ceiling and working in multi-cultural, multi-national and multi-disciplinary fields, have been her trademark throughout her career.
She has served as Director of Humanitarian Aid Operations for Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific (ECHO). Previously she was the Director for the Quality of Programs and Projects globally of EU International Cooperation and Development with an annual budget of ten billion euros.
Always being interested in the link between academia and practice, she has served as the EU Fellow to St. Antony’s College, Oxford University and as a research associate at King’s College, London focusing on EU policies and the geopolitics of energy.
Earlier in her career, she served as Head of the European Commission Representation to Cyprus and as Head of Unit for the coordination of development cooperation programs in forty-four West and Central African and Caribbean countries. She has also served as a member of cabinet of two European Commission Commissioners.
She has an extensive experience in the formulation of policy: e.g., information society and technology, development cooperation, trade, humanitarian aid, research, foreign affairs and diplomacy, energy policy, SME promotion, gender inclusion, conflict resolution. She has represented the EU to numerous high level international fora and multilateral negotiations, as well as, in public speaking engagements. She has travelled to over 120 countries.
Before joining the EU, she was Special Adviser to two government ministers in Greece and the Managing Director of a private consultancy firm.
Ambassador Kaminara has a B.Sc (Hons.) in Geology and Physics, from King’s College London, a MSc in Management Science from Imperial College and a Maîtrise in International Politics from ULB University of Brussels.
She is the recipient of the Global Ambassador Award in 2021 and of the International Peace Award for her work on interfaith harmony.
Amb. Kaminara is an associate-editor of the “The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Transactions on Technology and Society Journal.”
